I was really struck by the following extract, written by Beryl Pugsley with reference to God testing Abraham’s faith:
God’s people are often exposed to great tests without any reason given.
Like Abraham, even in our severest trials, we can hope for the mercy of God.
Our hardest tests involve our greatest loves. The anticipation of the trial is often the bitterest part. The journey to Moriah was three excruciating days long. How the words ‘Take your son... and offer him as a burnt offering’ must have dropped like molten lead into Abraham’s heart. So too, do words like ‘the cancer is spreading’; ‘the child is handicapped’; ‘the divorce is finalised’; ‘a retrenchment is announced’ drop hotly onto our hearts.
Obedience is often easier than trusting. Obedience is rational, reasonable and wise, while trusting in confusing situations that defy explanation can be much harder.
Passing the test was followed by the outpouring of blessing, Genesis 22:15-18. When the test is hard, God is up to something big!
